Not All Carbon Is the Same.

Many municipal water systems use chloramine rather than free chlorine for disinfection. Catalytic carbon is designed to improve chloramine reduction compared with ordinary activated carbon. It generally costs more, but carbon selection matters when treating chloraminated water.

Ask: “What type of carbon is in this system?” If they say “Activated Carbon”, follow up with “Does that remove chloramine?” (Hint: Conventional activated carbon can reduce chloramine. Catalytic carbon generally does so faster; contact time matters.)

Having Carbon Isn’t the Same as Having Enough Carbon.

Carbon filtration depends on both the type and quantity of carbon, along with how long water remains in contact with it. A system can contain carbon but provide limited treatment at high household flow rates.

Ask: “How much carbon is in my system, and what treatment performance can I expect at normal household flow rates?”

8% vs. 10% Crosslinked Resin.

Softening resin removes hardness minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Ten-percent crosslinked resin generally offers improved resistance to oxidative degradation compared with conventional 8% resin, potentially extending media life.

Ask: “Does this system use 8% or 10% crosslinked softening resin?”

Your Water Pressure Matters.

A control valve’s advertised maximum flow rating isn’t necessarily the flow rate at which the complete system performs effectively. Your water-treatment system should accommodate real household demand, including multiple fixtures operating simultaneously.

Ask: “How did you determine this system is properly sized for my household?”

Where Does the Wastewater Go?

Improper drain connections can let raw sewage back up into your water-softening equipment. Proper wastewater routing and an air gap help prevent contamination.

Ask: “Where will my regeneration drain connect, and how will it be protected against backflow?”
